Why Settle for Shampoo When only Real Poo will Do?

I  know when I wrote about homemade deodorant in our green living segment, you all thought I was an insufferable hippie. But those of you who tried it were amazed and so you’re just going to have to trust me again. This was a tough sell for me. You see, I have a gorgeous berry shampoo; opalescent in appearance and sublime in scent. What can I say? I’m really into girlie hair smells. Giving all this up for a shampoo made from baking soda and a conditioner made with apple cider vinegar sounded more like someone tricking me into a bizarre science experiment prank than an actual hair care solution. And then I tried it…

Just mix one tablespoon of baking soda in a cup of water. Pour that over your hair and work it in.

Rinse.

Your conditioner will be 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1/2 cup of water. Just chuck that over too.

Rinse really well  or you’ll end up smelling like a salad side.

Voila! Silky smooth, manageable, untangled, de-frizzed, magnificent mane!

If it sounds like this is way too good to be true, I urge you to try it just once. You’ll be so glad you did. You can use this magic formula no matter what products you use in your hair. The baking soda will clean your hair gently of gunk and product without stripping it of its natural oils while the vinegar will add shine and help keep it manageable.

Aside from the really great hair days you will have for all eternity, there are a number of other happy consequences:

  • Save money on hair care products
  • Use less plastic (so Mother Nature can have a good hair day too)
  • No chemicals in your hair
  • You have a great campfire story to tell your friends
  • Best. Hair. Day. EVER!

Awesome! I tried this and can’t believe the results. I won’t be buying shampoo in the future!

So simple and so wonderful – who knew it would be so easy I have found my hair less frizzy and so much more manageable. I will agree that you have to rinse the vinegar out really well, I didn’t the first time and I spent the whole day smelling like apple cider.

Thanks for the recipe, so simple yet so effective. I tried it and it works well…. but i have some questions about it:
    – Are there any implications from using this natural hair washing method/recipe in the long run? Will it have an effect on the hair overall health or scalp condition?
    – Will the same recipe work well for oily hair/scalp?

    Cheers.

No long term negative effects – only positive since there are only natural ingredients. It works wonders on oily hair

    Thanks for the answer Nikki.

I’ve recently started using the tea tree oil for my hair. It has many benefits (some mentioned on my site in a cool info-graphics) and I used it in the conditioner recipe you provided in the article above. Give it a try, if you like the tea tree oil smell. 🙂

    Thanks again!
